This person keeps saying bad stuff about you.

Talking about how you don’t really know what you’re doing.

How you’re a total failure.

Even calling you an “imposter” and “a big phony.”

If you don’t shut this person up, he (or she, whichever it is) is going to ruin your business. Want to know who this person is? Well…

…take a good long look in the mirror.

Because the “person” I am talking about is your internal dialogue… the voice of your inner fears and doubts.

Now, maybe the lies your little “internal demon” tells you about yourself are different. Probably, though, they are similar, maybe just slight variations, on the ones above.

But you’ve got to get this “internal dialogue’ thing straightened out. Because if you don’t, it can literally kill you.

Let me give you an example from my own life…

You may already know that I am a copywriter and marketing consultant. A large portion of my income is derived from client work. For the longest time, I could not bring myself to charge higher fees.

Which meant I had to take on a LOT of clients in order to feed my income goals.

At the height of my madness, I was working on 6 to 8 projects at any one given time, working 80 to 100 hours a week, and surely headed for an early grave. One night, I got a phone call from someone wanting me to do a project for them over the holidays.

At that point in time, I was charging $7,500 to write product launch sales copy. I did not want to take on this new project over the holiday (Thanksgiving — about 6 years ago), but I also did not want to say “no”.

So I quoted a fee twice what I normally charged, knowing they would refuse.

“That will be $15,000,” I said in a steady voice.

“Would you like us to wire that to you, or is a check okay?” said the person on the other end of the phone.

It took a while for that to sink in.

It was at that moment I realize that my fear and false beliefs had held me back from charging what I was worth. In one instant, simply because I adopted a different attitude (I expected a “no”, and was totally fine with that)…

I doubled my income, and cut my workload in half.

Fast forward to today: my client roster includes many New York Times best-selling authors, and I get paid an extraordinary amount of money to write launch copy (on the rare occasions that I accept an assignment).

Let’s just put it this way: it’s a lot more than $15,000.

I have the God-given privilege of working on the schedule that I determine, with clients that I choose, on projects that interest me. I can decide to travel at a moment’s notice. I often do. I say all of this not to boast. I am making a point. The point is to get you to ask yourself, “How long am I willing to keep living a life I did not choose?”

When you look that person in the mirror that we were talking about earlier, can you honestly say you’re living life on exactly your terms?

By working less, relaxing more, and being paid rates higher than you ever dreamed possible?
