What It Means To Follow Jesus

But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
– Romans 8:11

Sometimes we forget exactly what it means to be a Christian.

Being a Christian is not about becoming a nicer person.

It is not about going to church a certain number of times per week, or having a special “quiet time” every morning, or even about being able to quote certain Bible verses.

No, being a Christian is not any of those things.

It is having a relationship with Christ; and when we do have that relationship with Him, it means that Holy Spirit is living inside of us.

The Bible tells us that this is the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead. It is no different!

Now pause for a moment and carefully think about this next question: if Holy Spirit can raise Jesus from the dead, what can He do in your life?

If that thought opens up new possibilities for you, congratulations! You probably just experienced a little bit of hope, perhaps even a little bit of joy.

Cultivate that hope, and that joy, and guard it carefully from the skeptics and naysayers in your life. That hope within us is a sign of the Presence of the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead.

He is still in the business of doing miracles today.

He is ready, willing, and able to do them for you!

Thanks Ray. Your words are exactly what I need to hear right now. All things are possible with him. We just have to let him let us down the right path and follow his promptings.

  • Would you say that Jesus wants to do miracles for others through you? In other words, you through Christ, you become the tool for his miracles, not just the recipient of miracles.

I actually do think that following Jesus means becoming a nicer person. How could you not? If you receive so much love, won’t that have an effect on the quality of your life, including your relationships? Not a pushover, if you fear getting too soft.

    • Well, yes… Jesus commanded us to heal the sick, cast out demons, and even raise the dead. Those are the effects of His “will…done on earth as it is in Heaven”. Same thing for being nice – it is an effect of being in right relationship with Him, but is not the sole aim.

      Thanks for your thoughtful comment.

    Amen Brother!

  • Hah! Love that! Thanks Larry.

  • Believing in your heart that He died to pay the price for your sin, that He is the Son of God, that God raised Him from the dead, and that through Jesus’s sacrifice you have right standing with God. Confessing Him as your Lord as well as your Saviour.

My question was/is similar to Blase’s. We’ve heard so many times “relationship with Christ”, those words thrown about so often we don’t even think of what it really means. And your answer doesn’t really answer it either.

Everyone has a relationship with everyone else. Even Satan has a relationship with Jesus: It’s called “enemies”. I have a mother-son relationship with my mother. I have a friendship relationship with my friends. We can have a saviour-saved relationship with Jesus, or Lord-servant relationship with Him. Or a King-subject relationship. Or a friend relationship. Or even an enemy relationship. “Relationship” is such a general word; it needs to be defined and specified WHAT KIND OF relationship you’re talking about. And your answer definitely does NOT say anything about the kind of relationship or even describes the relationship. Your answer only says what we’re supposed to DO (which is, “confessing”), not how we are supposed to relate to Him. Confessing Him as Lord does not make Him Lord to us. We must act and behave as though He is really our Lord, and this means obeying His every command.

      • I’m merely telling you what scripture says. And as for obeying, Jesus says if we love Him we obey Him…it’s an effect of loving Him.

We are not saved by having a relationship, we have a relationship because we are saved. We are saved when we accept His free gift. That is not by working for it. “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God…”

Thanks for the message Ray. One scripture I have marked in my Bible that I believe follows what you have written.

1 John 1:5 “This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all”

    All the best,

     Thanks Ray
You are a breath of fresh air.
A man of God, speaking out openly into the business community.

I do not know who penned this phrase, but I sure have claimed it…..
“Jesus paid the price & we get to keep the change”
Now is the perfect time to have an ever increasing intimacy with Holy Spirit
and know it is well to TRUST God with every detail of our lives.

Thank you so much & I gladly hold you in intecessory prayer.

May the peace of Christ continue to fill you to overflowing and may
it flow out to every one you meet – whether personally or electronically.

Glad to be your sister in Christ.

    • Thank you Joy – you are aptly named!

  • Anah,

First, and absolutely of most importance, make sure you are following Jesus. Accept Him as your Lord (your Master) and as your Savior. It’s not complex. All that is required:

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

    Romans 10:9

Then I strongly suggest you get into a good Bible-believing church near your home. Engage with that community. “Do life” with them – they are your spiritual brothers and sisters.

To help you discern what others may teach, may I suggest you read the book “Destined to Reign” by Joseph Prince. You can find out more about him and what he teaches at http://JosephPrince.org.

    God bless you!
